Vermeer compatible rods

Drill rods compatible with the Vermeer D24×40

The Vermeer D24×40 is one of the most widely used mid-class horizontal directional drilling rigs. It runs a rod with 60,3 mm outside diameter, 8 mm wall thickness and a 66,7 mm tool joint. The same rod size also runs on the D40×40; the only difference is rod length — 3.048 mm for the D24×40 and 4.572 mm for the D40×40.

Figures are taken from the master drill rod tables. Measuring the tool joint diameter of your existing rod with callipers is a surer check than the model code alone.

Why these figures matter

The 6.300 Nm maximum torque is the defining figure for this class: if the rig rotary torque exceeds it, thread galling and rod failure become a real risk. The 33 m minimum bend radius sets the bore profile; no entry curve tighter than this radius can be planned.

STETON rigs in the same torque class

The 6.300 Nm torque class corresponds to the range these STETON rigs work in. If you are evaluating a new machine, this is the starting point for comparison.

Frequently asked

About Vermeer D24×40 drill rods.

Does the D24×40 take 3 m or 4,5 m rods?

The D24×40 rod box is designed for 3.048 mm (about 3 m) rods. The 4.572 mm rod is made to the same dimensions but is intended for longer-box machines such as the D40×40. Confirm your rod box length before ordering.

Can these rods be mixed with original Vermeer rods in one string?

When the dimensions match (60,3 mm OD, 66,7 mm tool joint) they will physically make up. In a mixed string, however, thread wear and torque behaviour can differ; tell us your rig and thread form and we will assess it with you.

How many rods do I need?

A 180 m crossing with 3 m rods takes roughly 60 rods, plus entry allowance and spares. Tell us your longest planned crossing and we will work out the count together.
