Mini Rig

STETON S200A

The S200A is one of the steerable horizontal drilling rigs that delivers the highest efficiency relative to its size. Its variable-displacement hydraulic pumps — with proportional flow, low internal friction and a high hydraulic output ratio — convert the power from the diesel engine into motion with the least loss compared to its competitors on the market. Thanks to its compact structure, it fits easily onto a single truck with all its equipment. It is in the high price/performance category. With a 400 L/min mud pump that no other machine in its class has, it does not strain the machine's hydraulic system — it lets the mud do the work. Its combination of transport footprint, torque and mud flow makes it a practical first rig for contractors working on urban utility crossings.

Mini-Midi Rig

STETON S350A

The S350A sits at the very top of the list of the highest-capacity, most efficient steerable horizontal drilling rigs that can be transported on a single truck. Thanks to its high-engineering diesel-hydraulic drive system, it converts the power from the diesel engine into motion with the highest efficiency. Its patented power-transmission technology minimises losses, producing more power with less fuel. This gives it a torque value of 15,832 Nm that no other machine in its class can match. Also, like all Steton steerable horizontal drilling rigs, instead of using ordinary off-the-shelf market software, it runs its own software designed specifically for each machine by Steton engineers to get the most out of it. This makes operations such as fault diagnosis, improvement and function upgrades easy — and even possible remotely. While the thrust of chain-driven machines drops by half by design, the thrust and pullback of the rack & pinion S350A are equal. This value can also be increased up to double (70 tonnes) on request with Boost Mode.

Midi Rig

STETON S600A

The S600A sits at the very top of the mid-segment steerable horizontal directional drilling rig category. Thanks to the high-efficiency hydraulic components and minimum internal-loss ratio of the whole series, it offers the highest pump flow in its class with 600 L/min and optional 800 L/min mud pump choices. It solves, in the most optimal way, the high torque and mud demand required especially for large-diameter pipes. It is the natural step up for contractors moving beyond the crowded mini-rig class into large-diameter and long-crossing work. Thanks to a rod box/magazine rarely seen in this class, rod-changing operations are extremely practical, fast and can be handled easily by a single person (the operator).

Midi Rig

STETON S600A-L

The S600A-L is the long-rod variant of the S600A. All its technical values are the same as the S600A; the difference is that it uses 4.5-metre rods instead of the standard 3 metres. Thanks to the longer rods, the number of rod additions is reduced and operations speed up on long lines. With high-efficiency hydraulic components, a 600 L/min (optional 800 L/min) mud pump and a rod magazine, it delivers superior performance on large-diameter pipe crossings.

Maxi Rig

STETON S800

The S800 is the entry model of the maxi range, picking up where the heavy class ends. With 800 kN of thrust and pullback, 40,000 Nm of rotary torque and 800 L/min of mud flow, it installs pipe from Ø300 to Ø1200 mm on crossings reaching 1000 metres. Its 4,500 mm rods and 9,600 mm frame call for a tighter set-up area than rigs of comparable capacity, which shortens site preparation on river and motorway crossings. It is the right starting point for large-diameter water, sewer and gas transmission mains that the 60-tonne class cannot carry.

Maxi Rig

STETON S1350

The S1350 is a maxi-class rig that pulls pipe up to Ø1500 mm with 1350 kN of thrust and pullback. Its 55,000 Nm of torque and 1000 L/min of mud flow deliver the two figures needed together to keep the bore clean while running a large reamer. The 6,000 mm rods cut the number of rod connections on a 1000-metre line appreciably, shortening the crossing and reducing the risk of connection-related failure. With Ø114 and Ø127 mm rod options, the same rig adapts to different ground and diameter scenarios.

Maxi Rig

STETON ST2200

The ST2200 is a 2200 kN maxi rig driven by twin diesel engines. Its 85,000 Nm of torque and 1500-metre maximum crossing length are built for long river and strait crossings completed in a single pull. The two-engine power pack exists so the rig can absorb the friction torque of a long rod string while still feeding the mud pump at full flow, which single-engine rigs cannot do simultaneously. It runs Ø127 mm rods in 6,000 mm lengths.

Maxi Rig

STETON ST3800

The ST3800 is the largest rig in the range: 3800 kN of thrust and pullback, 138,000 Nm of rotary torque and crossings reaching 2000 metres. It installs pipe up to Ø2000 mm, the class of work that covers marine outfalls, strait crossings and large-diameter transmission mains where open-cut is not an option. A 9,600 mm rod length and Ø168 mm rod diameter reduce both the connection count and the torsional risk of the string over a 2000-metre line. At 68 tonnes and 18,800 mm long, the rig needs a project-specific transport and site set-up plan.

Which rig for which job?

Three questions decide the rig: how large is the pipe, how long is the crossing, what is the ground? The answers point straight to a pullback class. Getting the class right avoids both wasted budget and the risk of a stuck pipe.

20-tonne class — compact

Urban infrastructure: water, gas, power and fibre lines. Small and medium pipe diameters, short to mid-length crossings, tight job sites. Travels on a single truck with all its tooling.

35-tonne class — mid

Municipal networks, mid-diameter trunk lines, road crossings. Handles the diameters and distances the compact class cannot, without the transport and footprint burden of the heavy class.

60-tonne class — heavy

Long crossings under rivers, motorways and railways; large-diameter steel and PE pipelines. The long-rod S600A-L gains speed on long lines with fewer rod connections.

Four figures, four decisions.

Push / pull force

The value that defines the rig class. It works as thrust on the pilot bore and as pullback during reaming and pipe installation. Larger pipe diameters and longer crossings need more pullback; pick above the nominal requirement to keep a margin for sticking. On the S200A and S350A, Boost mode briefly doubles that margin.

Rotary torque

The force that turns the rod string and the tool. Rock bits, mud motors and large-diameter reamers demand high torque. A low-torque rig cannot advance in hard ground, and friction torque on long rod strings must be allowed for.

Mud flow

Bentonite mud carries the cuttings out of the bore, stabilises the hole and reduces friction. A high-flow pump lets the mud do the work instead of straining the hydraulics. On large reamers and long lines, flow rate becomes the decisive figure.

Engine power and emissions

The diesel engine that drives the hydraulic pumps. The compact, mid and heavy classes use FIAT / CUMMINS Euro 5 engines; Euro 5 means compliance on European job sites and better fuel economy. In the maxi class, the ST2200 and ST3800 run twin-engine power packs so the rig can absorb the friction torque of a long rod string while feeding the mud pump at full flow.

About HDD rigs.

How far can an HDD rig drill?

Distance is not a property of the rig alone; it depends on soil class, pipe diameter, rod count and the mud programme. The same rig covers very different distances in sand and in rock. Share your bore profile and we will tell you which class is enough.

What is Boost mode?

A short-term hydraulic overdrive above nominal pullback: 40 tonnes on the S200A and 70 tonnes on the S350A. It is used to free the pipe when it sticks, not as a continuous working value.

Which ground conditions do STETON rigs handle?

Sand, silt, clay and gravel with standard directional bits; hard rock formations with rock drilling bits or a mud motor. Soil class changes the bit and reamer choice more than the rig choice.

Which engines are fitted?

The compact, mid and heavy classes use FIAT / CUMMINS Euro 5 diesel engines: S200A 121 kW, S350A 153 kW, S600A and S600A-L 194 kW. The maxi class steps up in power, and the ST2200 and ST3800 run twin-engine power packs: S800 and S1350 264 kW, ST2200 2 × 264 kW, ST3800 2 × 295 kW. Engine make in this class is set by the order configuration.

Will my Vermeer or Ditch Witch rods fit a STETON rig?

Adapters are available between thread standards, and we stock Vermeer- and Ditch Witch-compatible rods. Tell us your machine and rod thread and we will specify the connection.

How much does an HDD rig cost?
